Abstract
Objectives : Our study evaluated the effect of certain putative behavioural risk factors among menopausal women on bone mineral density(BMD) and the prevalence of osteoporosis.

Materials and Methods : BMD was measured using DEXA(dual energy X-ray absorptiometry) instrument toward 411 menopausal women aged 40 to 74. The characteristics of the subjects including life styles like diet pattern, health-related habit, physical activity were compared between group with osteoporosis and group without osteoporosis.

Results : The number of osteoporosis patients among study subjects were 217 persons(52.8%). It showed a tendency that the higher the age of subjects was, the lower BMD was, so aging was a related factor with osteoporosis. Some characteristics of life styles of the subjects like taking high calcium diet, frequency to take meat, coffee, alcohol or tobacco preference, degree of physical activity due to home labor and occupation, and the performance of health promotion activity were found out to be significant related factors with osteoporosis.

Conclusion : Further study to find true risk factors of osteoporosis in Korean menopausal women and appropriate preventive measures against the disease must be made.
